| Intrepid young
photographer Agnes Chen teams up with veteran photojournalist Robert
Stone and journalist-educator Barry Lowe to produce a collection of
images that captures the subtleties and contradictions of China Now.
In the space of less than a century China has moved
along a steep and ragged slope from virtual feudalism to regimented
socialism. Now it is engaged in a sudden sprint towards capitalism and
the vaguely understood modernity associated with it.
The landscape of change that predominates in China
today provides the inspiration for this book. The photos show the old
and the new, often juxtaposed to symbolize the melding of traditions
and attitudes that is a salient feature of this particular time in
Chinese history.
