| The subject of
Getting to Lamma is a young American woman who carves out a
place for herself in Hong Kong. To do so she must deal with an old
flame, a handsome young Shanghainese, two babies and an elderly
Chinese nurse. This is Hong Kong expatriate society at the countdown
to Chinese takeover, with the harsh realities of China no longer kept
at bay. There is also a deeper story, of growing into a life, an
imperfect but satisfactory life that finds its purpose on Lamma, an
unfashionable offshore island far removed from the expectations and
ambitions of a once fashionable New Yorker.
