| Mani Rao was
born in 1965, and lived in various parts of India and in New Zealand
and Hong Kong. A literature graduate who knew better than to earn a
living writing poetry, she re-incarnated herself in the world of
media. She now works at a television network in Hong Kong.
In her more significant poetic life, she has authored
four collections of poetry – Wingspan (1987), Catapult
Season (1992), Living Shadows (1997) The Last Beach
(1999) and Salt (2000). Her work has appeared in various
magazines.
Wishing to change the commercial realities
of poetry and to make poetry thrive in a world of louder media, she
has tried what she calls 're-packaging' of her own poetry – as with
her poetry on postcards (1996) and poetry as graffiti in 'The
Writing on the Wall' (1997).
Mani Rao is one of the founders of Outloud,
the gathering of poets that meets regularly in Hong Kong. One of Hong
Kong's most important literary happenings, the Outloud poets
monthly draw audiences of up to a few hundred people.
