Bill Purves

China on the Lam
on foot across the
People's Republic

"Thanks to Bill Purves and his rather mistitled book, China on the Lam, all those who love sleeping rough, rain-soaked clothing, foot blisters (your Swiss Army knife will be great for lancing them) and endurance marches can now learn the answers—two, yes, no, and 12 paper napkins....Purves has written an enjoyable read about one man's jaunt through a rural China that seems like a place out of yesteryear. But it's still there, with it's fabled hospitality intact. Purves reminds us of this, and we should be grateful."

Hong Kong Magazine

A Canadian by birth, Bill Purves has led a double life. For twenty-five years he has worked as an engineer and manager. He has also maintained a thirty-five-year career as a competitive runner. Since 1983 he has been perfecting both his management and his running skills from his home in Hong Kong. He is the author of two other books about China: Barefoot in the Boardroom (Allen & Unwin) about China's working class and Three Chinas (Dundurn Press) about its intellectuals.

About Barefoot in the Boardroom:

"[W]ell written, often hilarious"

The Globe and Mail [Toronto]

"An amusing guide to the stresses and strains of doing business in and with China"

Far Eastern Economic Review
