Jan Alexander
Getting to Lamma

Jan Alexander is a journalist who divides her time between New York and Hong Kong. Her articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review, Newsweek, and Eastern Express. She is a writer for the Economist Intelligence Unit and Fodor's Guides to Hong Kong and China. With Lottie Da she co-authored the book Bad Girls of the Silver Screen, a look at Hollywood's depiction of prostitutes. Getting to Lamma is her first novel.

The subject of Getting to Lamma is a young American woman who carves out a place for herself in Hong Kong. To do so she must deal with an old flame, a handsome young Shanghainese, two babies and an elderly Chinese nurse. This is Hong Kong expatriate society at the countdown to Chinese takeover, with the harsh realities of China no longer kept at bay. There is also a deeper story, of growing into a life, an imperfect but satisfactory life that finds its purpose on Lamma, an unfashionable offshore island far removed from the expectations and ambitions of a once fashionable New Yorker.
