Yu Yaosheng Quaille's Practical Chinese-English Dictionary
 
Yu Shaosheng was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, China, in 1933 and graduated in 1956 from the English Language Department of the Foreign Languages Institute of the People’s Liberation Army. Demobilized in 1969, he has devoted most of his life to teaching English In 1978 he was admitted to the Foreign Languages Department of Shanghai’s distinguished Fudan University as a lecturer; in 1987 he was promoted to associate professor and in 1992 to professor. In 1992, he won Fudan’s first prize for English language instruction. He has published a number of books on the English language: English Grammar and English Textbooks For Students of Arts from 1981 to 1986 (awarded Shanghai’s Excellent Textbook award); Speak Eloquent English in 1987, and a series of books for students preparing for the TOEFL test. He has also published academic articles and translations in Chinese domestic magazines and periodicals. Professor Yu is also a calligrapher and traditional Chinese landscape painter.

He collaborated with Sheng Peilin on Quaille's Practical Chinese-English Dictionary in both reference and pocket editions.
